Mobile technologies exist in every facet of modern day society, and it stands to reason that these same devices would make their way into classrooms around the globe. While some school systems have banned their use, Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policies are gaining popularity in many districts. With any new policy adoption comes both appreciation and apprehension. This literature review seeks to address the BYOD movement as it pertains to K-12 education. BYOD’s impact on educational culture, costs, network security and student safety is examined. An overview of both student and teacher training as well as advantages and disadvantages are also included. In addition, the paper presents information about how the lack of research should raise concerns for districts wishing to adopt the policy. Mobile technologies increase exponentially every day, and considerations for BYOD implementation in K-12 education need to be carefully evaluated by all stakeholders.
